Plan Now to Transition Microsoft Dynamics 365 Field Service to the Cloud

September 14, 2021 Katherine Turner-Lawrence

If your business is looking for a more efficient way to manage its field resources, Dynamics 365 Field Service is proving beneficial to our customers and other companies around the world. Gartner estimates that Microsoft has over 400,000 users while Microsoft reports it processes more than 3.5 million work orders and 7.2 million resource bookings monthly. Customers have also added 14+ million assets per month and passed 200 million assets under management in Field Service in late 2019. Usage of the service is reportedly doubling every six months.

And for those businesses that currently rely on the on-premises version of Dynamics 365 Field Service, now’s the time to plan for when Microsoft will end support in June 2022. Your application and its mobile device companion will not stop working, but you won’t be able to roll out new installations for any new end-users that join your company.

The download package to install the on-premises version will no longer be available after December 31, 2021, and the mobile application that works with Dynamics 365 Field Service will no longer be available after June 30, 2022. In the meantime, you have the option to migrate at any time, which will also require an upgrade to the Field Service cloud application. Microsoft offers a general migration program, and the transition is made a bit easier as Microsoft will not require a licensing change.

While Microsoft provides all the tools you need, Western Computer can provide any consultation services you require to facilitate the migration to the cloud and to help your organization adjust. While the process flows fairly smoothly, it’s a good idea to plan now for when you will make the change. You want to make sure your field and office personnel that use the application feel comfortable in the new environment. Their screen views will not change dramatically, but there are some minor adjustments to learn.
